The Story of the Brand
When Etienne de Swardt founded his perfume house in 2006, he chose a name that refers to his birthplace: the Orange Free State in South Africa, a land of rugged beauty, strong colours and unforgettable smells, but also of contrasts and mixed emotions. Unity, beauty and freedom became the core values of the house. Its address, 69 rue des Archives in the Paris Marais, later even gave its name to a fragrance: Archives 69. In 2026, Etat Libre d’Orange celebrates its twentieth anniversary.
The Signature of the House
The house describes itself as a perfumery with a point of view: free, independent and often ironic in its naming, yet always attentive to its raw materials. Fragrances become stories, inspired by poetry, film, mythology and everyday life, from Victor Hugo and Apollinaire to Newton and Gilgamesh. The bottle is deliberately simple and solid, with a three-coloured rosette on its edge as a seal of freedom: the juice takes centre stage, and the superfluous makes way for the essential.
Perfumers and Collections
The collection numbers more than thirty fragrances, divided between The Classic Collection and the richer Orange Extraordinaire Collection, which includes Nostos, Frustration, Soul of my Soul, Spice Must Flow, 500 Years, Experimentum Crucis and Uruk Chronicles. The house works with renowned perfumers, among them Quentin Bisch, Daniela Andrier, Antoine Lie, Jordi Fernández, Julie Massé, Caroline Sabas, Nisrine Grillie and Jérôme di Marino. Its collaborations are equally distinctive, such as with Rossy de Palma for Eau de Protection, with writer Chandler Burr for You or Someone Like You and with Givaudan for the upcycled Les Fleurs du Déchet - I Am Trash. Alongside perfumes, the house also creates scented candles.

Sécrétions Magnifiques is the conceptual manifesto that made the house’s name. Rien stands for smoky leather and incense, Like This for a warm scent of immortelle and ginger, and Hermann à mes côtés me paraissait une ombre for a cool, earthy chypre. She was an Anomaly is a soft skin scent built around iris and musk, and Putain des Palaces a powdery seduction of iris and rose.
