The Story of Zoologist
Zoologist was founded in 2013 by Victor Wong and is based in Toronto, Canada. The idea is as simple as it is original: animals fascinate us, through their habitats, behaviour, looks and even their smell. Zoologist captures these quirks of the animal kingdom in perfumes that are unusual, beautiful, playful and sometimes even shocking.
In 2014 the first three scents appeared: Beaver, Panda and Rhinoceros. Since then, the collection has grown into a menagerie of dozens of fragrances, from hummingbird to tyrannosaurus.
The Signature of the House
A Zoologist fragrance is never a literal copy of an animal, but a story in scent about its world. Bat takes you from tropical fruit to a damp cave, Squid to the deep sea with ink and ambergris, Harvest Mouse to a golden wheat field in autumn.
Another hallmark is the ethical choice: natural animal musks are always replaced with synthetic materials, and Zoologist does not test on animals. In the note lists, every animalic note carries an asterisk explaining this. All fragrances come as Extrait de Parfum in a 60 ml bottle with an illustrated animal portrait on the label.
Perfumers and Collections
Zoologist works with a different perfumer for each scent, which makes the collection remarkably varied. Prin Lomros created Bat, King Cobra, Rhinoceros and Sloth, among others; Tomoo Inaba composed Moth, Nightingale and Orchid Mantis; Shelley Waddington signed Civet and Hummingbird; and Céline Barel created Squid and Dragonfly. Antoine Lie, Pascal Gaurin, Nathalie Feisthauer, Spyros Drosopoulos and Sultan Pasha have also worked for the house.
Alongside the classic animals, Zoologist releases editions that give an existing scent a new face, such as Beaver Maple Edition, Dodo Jackfruit Edition, Macaque Fuji Apple and Yuzu Edition, Chameleon Tropical Blooms, Elephant Sanctuary Edition and Koala Joey Edition.
Popular Fragrances
Bat shows exactly what Zoologist is about: tropical fruit set against damp soil and minerals. Squid won the 2020 Fragrance Foundation Award for Perfume Extraordinaire of the Year and captures the briny deep. Moth is dark, spicy and powdery, while Nightingale is a pink floral chypre built around Japanese plum blossom.
Lovers of warmth often choose Camel with dates and incense, or Sacred Scarab, inspired by ancient Egyptian kyphi incense. Bee is a golden honey scent and Rhinoceros a powerful blend of whiskey, leather and tobacco.
