The Story of the Brand
The spark came years before the brand existed, in a German laboratory. Geza Schoen, then a young perfumer, was smelling raw materials on their own when one molecule stopped him: Iso E Super, synthesised at IFF in 1973. He recognised it instantly as the quiet constant in fragrances that otherwise had nothing in common. Together with Paul White, whom he met through a mutual friend, he launched Molecule 01 in 2006: a bottle without a cap, a label encoded in binary and no story to soften the idea. At first the concept seemed absurd, until the people wearing it kept being asked the same question: what are you wearing? Twenty years on, Molecule 01 is a modern classic and the house has a permanent boutique in Berlin, in a former art gallery on Augustraße.
The Signature of the House
Escentric Molecules does not start from the classic pyramid of top, heart and base notes, but from the effect of a molecule on the skin. Iso E Super is velvety and woody, Ambroxan fresh and mineral, Vetiveryl Acetate green and bitter-fresh, Javanol transparent like a light sandalwood, Cashmeran warm and resinous. These molecules behave in a particular way: they merge with the skin's own scent and sometimes seem to vanish and return, so that others often notice them before the wearer does. Paul White's design is part of that signature too: graphic molecular structures printed in inks of precious metals on the bottle, a visual translation of scent.
Perfumers and Collections
All fragrances are by Geza Schoen. The Molecule line (Molecule 01 to 05) each consist of a single aroma-molecule, pure and singular. The Escentric line (Escentric 01 to 05) places that same molecule at the centre of a complete composition; Escentric 02 is also available as an Extrait de Parfum with 30% Ambroxan. Molecule + pairs Iso E Super with a single natural ingredient, such as patchouli, iris, mandarin, guaiac wood, black tea, ginger, cistus, champaca and clary sage. There is also Cologne One, the house's first cologne, inspired by the freshness of a gin and tonic, as well as discovery sets in small flacons.
Popular Fragrances
Molecule 01 is the cult classic where it all began: 100% Iso E Super as a soft, woody aura. Escentric 01 brings the same molecule at 65% together with lime, pink pepper and orris. Molecule 02 and Escentric 02 revolve around Ambroxan and are fresh, salty and mineral. Within Molecule +, Molecule 01 + Patchouli and Molecule 01 + Iris are much-loved variations, while Cologne One shows a bright, sparkling side of the house.
