Inspiration
There is a split second in which everything is still undecided. Lightning has struck the juniper, the wood still trembles from the impact, and the question hangs heavy in the air: is this the end of the tree, or the moment it is forced to root deeper and live longer? The original Decision Eau de Parfum revolved around that single, decisive question. In Decision 42, Quentin Bisch freezes time at precisely that moment and raises the tension further.
The strike lands harder: neroli, cardamom and cinnamon draw the lightning sharper and hotter. The juniper turns from silhouette to shadow, darkened by Javanol, patchouli and rectified pine tar until it becomes smoky and far-reaching. And where ash might settle, Bisch chooses life: vanilla and labdanum give the base a warmth that does not resign, but endures. Decision 42 becomes a fragrance poised on the edge of a choice, realised as an Exceptional Extrait, the collection Amouage counts among its most precious creations.
Perfumer
Quentin Bisch. Amouage describes him as a madly gifted artist, at once painter, singer, writer and perfumer, whose talent lies in an unquenched thirst for beauty and his ability to reinvent his art through bold yet grateful statements.

The Signature of Decision 42
Decision 42 is not an amplification but a condensation. Where an eau de parfum on the Amouage scale holds between 15 and 35 percent perfume oil, this composition reaches 42 percent: less alcohol to carry the scent, more matter to fill it. It was then given six weeks of ageing, four weeks of maceration and two weeks of maturation. That patience lives in the texture: the transitions do not move in steps, but in shades.
The first seconds are a flash of light. Pink pepper crackles dry, cardamom brings a cool, almost camphorous clarity and cinnamon cuts through it glowing, cold and hot at once, like the air just after a strike. Bergamot and neroli hold on to the light, a white glow that lingers briefly before the dark returns.
Then it falls quiet, and the wood speaks. Juniper, resinous and needle-sharp, stands at the heart, surrounded by frankincense and myrrh, two resins with deep roots in Oman, the country where Amouage was founded in 1983. Rectified pine tar forms the smouldering core: redistillation removes the rawest, tarry fractions and leaves a refined smoke reminiscent of charred wood and soft leather. Javanol, a modern molecule with a creamy, radiant sandalwood profile, gives the sandalwood air and reach, so the smoke gains depth without smothering.
What remains when the smoke lifts is not ash but glow. Patchouli and cedarwood lay a dry, earthy foundation; vanilla and labdanum, the balsamic resin of the cistus shrub, fill it with amber warmth. On skin the whole story unfolds, from strike to survival: a composition that does not end in destruction, but in something that stays.
What our ParfuMaria team thinks of this fragrance
There are fragrances you describe and fragrances you retell. To us, Decision 42 belongs to the second kind. Anyone who knows the original will recognise the juniper and the aromatic clarity, but here everything stands closer to the fire: more shadow, more resin, a warmer finish. What moves us most is that Bisch never sacrifices light to darkness; bergamot and neroli keep the opening bright, while frankincense, myrrh and pine tar give the composition its gravity.
Within the Exceptional Extraits, this is for us the most cinematic composition: for lovers of smoky woods, incense and resinous conifers, and for evenings when a fragrance is allowed to tell a story. Apply sparingly and give the story time to unfold on the skin.
