1472 is the year in which Dante's La Divina Commedia was first printed. A solar bouquet of ylang-ylang pierces a cloud of white artemisia and casts its light on a sacred pillar of cinnamon and frankincense, while the scent of jasmine blossoms rises from the gardens of Eden. In 1472 La Divina Commedia first came off the printing press, and Histoires de Parfums turned that year into a scent that moves between light and shadow. What strikes us every time is the contrast in the opening: green, herbal artemisia set against the sunny softness of ylang-ylang. It feels like sunlight falling through church windows. In the heart the fragrance grows warmer and more spiritual, with frankincense smoking softly and cinnamon glowing, while jasmine draws a breathing, floral line. On the skin it slowly descends to a base of amber, benzoin and rum, balsamic and warm like an evening by candlelight. It is an amber with substance, not simply sweet but layered and narrative. The 60 ml bottle is a lovely way to get acquainted with this composition, or to place it beside another favourite for the cooler months.
