With Amber Aoud, Roja Dove pays homage to the traditional methods and style of Middle Eastern perfumery. His palette here: gum resins prized by perfumers for thousands of years. On a soft, warm floor of cinnamon, saffron and benzoin, fig and Rose de Mai play their mild, sweet part.

The Signature of Amber Aoud
Amber in perfumery is not a raw material but an accord: a warm, resinous glow built from balsams such as benzoin and labdanum. Here that accord is joined by oud, birch and oakmoss, making it smokier and drier than most amber perfumes. The fig in the heart is the secret weapon: milky and green at once, it softens the roses and makes the spices gleam. Orris and ambergris give the drydown a velvet finish.

For us Amber Aoud is the best way into Roja's oud collection: recognisably Eastern, but never sharp. The citrus fades quickly and gives way to rose and saffron, which together seem almost golden in colour. After a few hours it becomes a soft blanket of resin, sandalwood and a hint of smoke that lingers in a scarf until the next morning. October-to-March evenings are Amber Aoud season for us. A scent for anyone seeking warmth with elegance.
